Abstract
Arteries in vivo are subjected to large longitudinal stress which may change dramatically due to vascular disease and surgery. However, little is known about the effect of longitudinal stress on vascular wall remodeling, although the effects of tensile and shear stresses generated by blood pressure and flow have been well documented. The objective of our research is to determine the role of longitudinal stress in arterial wall remodeling.Using mechanical modeling and organ culture techniques, we have found that elevated longitudinal stretch promotes cell proliferation, while diminished longitudinal stretch lead to buckling in the arteries. Buckled arteries may become tortuous or kinked that lead to significant clinical complications. Results from our studies will not only enrich vascular mechanics with new knowledge of artery buckling and stability, but also be useful for the treatment and prevention of vascular diseases.
